I saw a video yesterday from The Council on Foreign Relations that discussed China’s influence on the African continent. As expected, they placated China’s imperialistic agenda and masked it as a multicultural investment. But the news I read about today proves why China is not and never will be an alley to Africa.
The following information comes from BBC News.
Hundreds of African residents have been evicted from hotels and apartments in Guangzhou, China’s southern city, amid testing for the coronavirus. Nigerian student Tobenna Victor advised the following:
“They are accusing us of having the virus.”
“We paid rent to them and after collecting rent they chased us out of the house. Since last night we have been sleeping outside.”
Guangzhou is the home of China’s largest African communities, and it’s become a hub for traders who buy and sell goods to the continent. Some residents have said that they’ve been evicted from their apartments and others have been quarantined without knowing their COVID-19 test results. Authorities in China fear a second outbreak and have required people coming abroad to be quarantined for 14 days.
But why target Africans when Africans have an Open Door Policy for the Chinese?
Nothing about this article surprised me, and what’s frustrating is that African people will continue to learn the hard way. We advocate for multiculturalism harder than anyone and always end up on the losing side. China’s behavior on the continent proves that they have no respect for Africa. But with corrupt leadership and passive civilians endorsing it, nothing is going to change anytime soon.
I know this because it’s happening here in the United States.
