According to Knowridge, scientists from the University of Kentucky have developed a medical face mask membrane that can capture and deactivate the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This membrane includes proteolytic enzymes that attach to protein spikes and deactivates them; SARS-CoV-2 is covered in spikes, allowing the virus to enter cells in the body.
The mask material filters out the virus, adding another layer of protection from COVID-19.
Scientists developed the membrane through a collaboration with a large-scale membrane manufacturer. This was then tested using SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins that were immobilized on synthetic particles.
I’ll keep you updated with any additional information.
Until Next Time…
