I’ve already highlighted the abuse many African domestic workers experience in the Middle East, so I was excited to come across a news article addressing their evacuation.
The following information is from Ghana Web.
200 Ghanaian domestic workers have been evacuated from Lebanon and sent to Accra, Ghana. Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this evacuation follows a series of heartbreaking experiences shared by young women. There are 600 more Ghanaian domestic workers who are appealing to officials to move back to Ghana. Through the partnership of the Cairo Mission and a humanitarian NGO, IBONWORLD, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to evacuate those 600 or more in the next few weeks.
This is great news, and I hope a permanent end to domestic servitude for African people is on the horizon.
