I came across some interesting content that I had to share with you all. The following information comes from WebMD.
Scientists believe that air conditioners may be an overlooked factor in the spread of COVID-19. Cool temperatures create the perfect conditions for spreading colds and flu, and us being indoors under ACs makes it easier to swap germs. A professor of Environmental Health and Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Edward Nardell, MD, advised the following:
“You go indoors for the cool, just as in the northeast and other cool places you go in for the warmth in winter, so you’re less socially distanced. You’re more likely to be touching the same surfaces that have been contaminated by people speaking and coughing etc.”
Air handlers work depending on outdoor temperatures. When temperatures are high, HVAC systems adjust the mix of fresh air they pull in to save energy. If someone is in a building spreading the virus, it can build up in the recirculated air. ACs also remove moisture from the air, which makes the spread easier.
As insightful as this information, I’m still not stressing out over the coronavirus or air conditioning. We’re poisoned daily from our food, water, and air. So it is what it is.
