Thousands of Ethiopian Workers Deported from the Middle East

Dr. Mumbi Seraki advised on her show that migrants returning to their homeland is prophetic, and the coronavirus outbreak seems to be proving her right.

The following information comes from Quartz Africa.

Thousands of undocumented Ethiopian workers are being deported from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia back to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, amid COVID-19. Both Middle Eastern countries are claiming that Ethiopians are vulnerable in spreading the virus. Ethiopia’s Health Minister, Lia Tadesse, advised the following:

“Ethiopian workers in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Djibouti are being forced to flee to their country, a situation that is becoming a challenge to contain the virus.”

Many of the returnees are maids and domestic servants. More than 2,870 Ethiopians were deported in the last month and 3,000 are expected to return within the next few weeks.

I know that many African men and women take up jobs in the Middle East out of necessity, but given the abuse that they face, I don’t look at this as bad news. Going forward, the governments in African countries will be forced to correct themselves because the relationship between Africa and the rest of the world will never be the same after this pandemic…which also isn’t bad news.
