Charlotte Family, Are You Ready for Kwanzaa?

Greetings Folks,

In a previous post, I advised that I would no longer indulge in Holiday materialism. My journey towards enlightenment has been convoluted and frustrating, but there’s a catharsis attached to disconnecting from Western culture. Never have I felt more at ease. So it’s only right that I highlight some events that could help others the way that they’ve helped me.

Kwanzaa Charlotte is an annual celebration opened to the city of Charlotte, NC. Coordinated by a collective of conscious individuals and organizations, Kwanzaa Charlotte’s educational and cultural events are centered around seven core principles: the principles of Nguzu Saba.

  1. Umoja – Unity
  2. Kujichagalia – Self-Determination
  3. Ujima – Collective Work & Responsibility
  4. Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
  5. Nia – Purpose
  6. Kuumba – Creativity
  7. Imani – Faith

This celebration is held from December 26 through January 1st. And the spirit of Kwanzaa Charlotte is summarized by the Afrikan term Ubunta, which means “I am because we are.”
