Since Barack Obama’s departure in 2017, I’ve gone out of my way to ignore him. But like many symbols in my community whose relevancy date gets extended, he keeps popping up and validating his inadequacies during his presidency.
According to The Hill, in an episode on Bruce Springsteen’s podcast, Barack Obama stated that reparations for African Americans are “justified,” but the “politics of white resistance and resentment” made pursuing the issue during his presidency a “non-starter.”
He advised the following:
“So, if you ask me theoretically: ‘Are reparations justified?’ The answer is yes.”
“There’s not much question that the wealth of this country, the power of this country was built in significant part — not exclusively, maybe not even the majority of it — but a large portion of it was built on the backs of slaves.”
“What I saw during my presidency was the politics of white resistance and resentment, the talk of welfare queens and the talk of the undeserving poor and the backlash against affirmative action. All that made the prospect of actually proposing any kind of coherent, meaningful reparations program struck me as, politically, not only a non-starter but potentially counterproductive.”
His comments during a 2008 campaign rally further support his recent confession.
“I fear that reparations would be an excuse for some to say ‘we’ve paid our debt’ and to avoid the much harder work of enforcing our anti-discrimination laws in employment and housing; the much harder work of making sure that our schools are not separate and unequal; the much harder work of providing job training programs and rehabilitating young men coming out of prison every year; and the much harder work of lifting 37 million Americans of all races out of poverty.”
“These challenges will not go away with reparations.”
“So while I applaud and agree with the underlying sentiment of recognizing the continued legacy of slavery, I would prefer to focus on the issues that will directly address these problems — and building a consensus to do just that.”
Barack Obama, hands down, is one of the most eloquent bullsh*tters when it comes to tackling race relations. Maybe it’s because of his multiracial heritage and identity, along with the fact that he has to placate “white resentment,” but his opinion is tone-deaf at this point.
Go away, sir. You’re not anchored in the Black American experience, history, or culture, so I don’t expect you to understand or make sense of this justice claim. You were given a two-term pass from my community strictly because of your family, complexion, and Essence magazine, and your time has been up. I’m sure there’s a nice island somewhere you can go to relax and be quiet.
Until Next Time…
