Police brutality isn’t just a Western problem. Protests happening in Nigeria are shining a light on an organization built to protect and serve, but somehow they chose abuse of power.

A Nigerian police force, The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), has been dissolved after allegations of police brutality. Protests erupted this past week after footage of the unit dragging two men out of a Lagos hotel, shooting one in the head, went viral. After massive outrage and shared abuses from the force started trending, President Muhammad Buhari responded with an official statement advising that SARS has been dissolved with immediate effect.

Protesters, Anuola and Ikechukwu Onanuku, stated the following:

“First it’s Sars and then it’s the whole police system, because even with ordinary policemen and women we are not safe.”

“This is not just about Sars, it’s about ending police brutality. We won’t stop, we’ll be here tomorrow and the next day and next year until there’s change. People are fed up, not just here but globally.”
